Build a Backyard Fire Pit in One Weekend
Stacked stone, no mortar, no concrete — a solid fire pit that becomes the center of every evening outside.

Materials
- Concrete retaining wall blocks (~36 for 3 courses)
- Paver base gravel (4–5 bags)
- Sand (2 bags)
- Steel fire ring insert (optional but recommended)
- Lava rock for the base
Tools
- Shovel
- Tamper
- Level
- Rubber mallet
- Wheelbarrow
How to build it
- 1
Pick the spot
Choose a location at least 10 feet from structures, fences, and overhanging branches. Check local fire codes first — some areas require permits or specific clearances.
- 2
Excavate and level the base
Mark a circle (drive a stake, tie a string, walk the circle with paint). Dig out 6" of soil, add 4" of paver base, and tamp it until it's firm and level. A solid base is 80% of a fire pit that doesn't lean by spring.
- 3
Lay the first course
Set the first ring of blocks on the base, checking level on every single block — side to side and front to back. Tap high spots down with the rubber mallet. The first course must be perfect; the rest follow it.
- 4
Stack remaining courses
Stagger the joints like brickwork. Set the steel ring inside before the final course if you're using one — it shields the blocks from direct flame and doubles the pit's lifespan.
- 5
Fill and enjoy
Add 2–3" of lava rock inside for drainage, surround the outside with gravel or pavers, and season the pit with a small first fire.
Pro tip
Buy 5–6 extra blocks. A few always arrive chipped, and matching blocks years later is nearly impossible.
