Build a Garage Pegboard Wall That Actually Works
Every tool visible, every tool reachable. The classic workshop upgrade, done right with proper spacing and zoning.

Materials
- 4×8 pegboard panel(s)
- 1×2 furring strips
- 2" wood screws
- Pegboard hook assortment kit
- Washers
Tools
- Drill/driver
- Stud finder
- Level
- Saw
How to build it
- 1
Plan your zones
Before mounting anything, lay your tools on the floor in groups: hand tools, garden tools, frequently used, rarely used. The pegboard should mirror how you work, not just fill wall space.
- 2
Mount furring strips
Pegboard needs a ¾" gap behind it for hooks to insert. Screw horizontal 1×2 furring strips into the studs every 16" — top, bottom, and middle. Use washers so screw heads don't pull through.
- 3
Hang the pegboard
Screw the pegboard panels to the furring strips at every strip, every 12 inches or so. Check level on the first panel — everything keys off it.
- 4
Hang tools heaviest-first
Start with heavy items on double hooks near the bottom, then work up with lighter tools. Trace tool outlines with a paint marker so everything has an obvious home — and it's obvious when something's missing.
Pro tip
Buy twice as many hooks as you think you need, and keep 20% of the board empty. Workshops grow.
